Help me get a Wheelchair

Hi everyone,

This weeks blog post is going to be a little different. I’m sharing something deeply personal that I never imagined I would need to talk about, let alone ask for help with... I’m raising money for a wheelchair, and while it feels incredibly awkward to reach out like this, I’ve realised that sometimes we all need a little support to get through tough times.

I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in both of my knees, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and Non-Epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD)… as well as a couple other things. These conditions have dramatically changed my life, affecting how I move, how I feel, and how I can function day-to-day.

Rheumatoid Arthritis makes even simple movements painful, especially in my knees. On bad days, the inflammation and pain are so severe that walking becomes nearly impossible.

POTS means that my body struggles to regulate blood flow properly, which can lead to dizziness, fainting, and a host of other issues that make standing or walking for extended periods a real challenge.

NEAD involves seizures that look like epileptic seizures but aren’t caused by electrical disruptions in the brain. They’re often triggered by stress or physical strain, making it difficult to predict when they’ll occur.

These conditions make everyday life a balancing act. On good days, I can manage relatively well with some pain and discomfort. But on bad days, when the RA flares up, or I’m dealing with frequent fainting spells or seizures, I’m nearly immobilised.

So why am I asking for help with an active wheelchair? The answer is a bit complicated.

Currently, the wheelchairs provided by the NHS aren’t suitable for someone in my situation. Because I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user (meaning I can walk short distances), I don’t qualify for a lightweight, self-propelled wheelchair. The NHS manual wheelchairs are too heavy for me to use effectively on my own, which limits my independence and ability to move around safely.

An active wheelchair is specifically designed to be lightweight and easy to maneuver, making it possible for me to use it independently. This type of wheelchair will allow me to:

  • Conserve energy: I’ll be able to move around without exhausting myself or worsening my symptoms.

  • Exercise safely: I can use the wheelchair to stay active, which is crucial for managing my conditions and maintaining my strength.

  • Maintain independence: On days when my conditions are particularly challenging, the wheelchair will help me get around and live my life without having to rely on others as much.

I’ve been assessed and fitted for a BauBuy chair, which is a high-quality active wheelchair that meets all my needs. It comes with custom features like a skin-protective cushion, custom hand rims, and a supportive backrest. However, the total cost is around £1,000—an amount I simply cannot afford on my own.

As much as I hate asking for help, I’ve realised that sometimes it’s the only way forward. I know times are tough for everyone right now, which makes this even harder to ask. But if you can contribute—even a small amount—it would mean the world to me. If you’re unable to donate, sharing my fundraiser with your network would be incredibly helpful and just as appreciated.

This isn’t just about a wheelchair. It’s about regaining control over my life and my health. It’s about being able to focus on my rehab and work toward a future where I can live more independently and safely. It’s about having the tools I need to manage my conditions and prevent further health complications.

The truth is, living with these conditions is exhausting— physically, emotionally, and mentally. Every time I feel like I’m finding some balance, something happens to set me back. But I refuse to let these challenges define my future. I have so much life ahead of me, and I want to live it to the fullest.

I can’t express how much your support means to me— whether it’s through a donation, sharing my story, or simply sending positive thoughts my way. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for considering helping me reach my goal.
